Adorning the Bride
The plantain tree has borne fruit and signifies fertility.
Our bride is the pretty rose that has just bloomed.
The groom’s women anoint her with oil,
And drape her in red silk and gold jewels,
Jasmines and firecracker are fixed into her hair,
The bride is bedecked like a queen.

(translated from voviyos - couplets sung during the roce ceremony of Catholics in South Canara, India)
